Throat Microphones

Author: Eric Morris

Throat microphones are used in two-way radio communication. These devices are attached to ones neck near the vocal cord. These microphones pick up vibration signals from the voice rather than the surroundings, enabling communication without any external disturbances. Throat microphones are specially designed where secrecy has to be maintained. The base model of throat microphones consists of a headphone and clip buttons. But there are variations in the specifications of these headsets and clip buttons. At present, a single throat mic can be used for all applications. Previously it was not so, it varies according to the voice vibrations. Throat microphones do not need any special installation procedures.

There are headphones with noise elimination technology that is useful in combat missions or in any other noisy conditions and are widely used by motorbike racers, aviators, etc. These head phones are made of high quality acoustic ear coil which is convenient and comfortable to the user. Special headphones are available exclusively for sports.

There are different models available for different type of helmet users. People using closed helmets use the microphones fixed in front of the helmet with the use of two-way tapes and the earphones are attached to the sides of the helmet. The unique feature of this type is that it reduces wind noise caused while riding. This system also provides a Push-to-Talk (PTT) button in the handlebar and a quick disconnect cable. In the case of open helmets, all the above features are available but only the microphones are pressed to the side and earphones are placed inside the lining of the helmet. They make use of waterproof PTT. In the case of beanie helmets, the headsets are placed around the neck and microphones near the mouth.

Recently, microphones are designed for specific purposes. Several organizations use dual active throat responders that make it possible to transmit only recognizable voice frequencies, and thereby avoiding all other insignificant noises. Earpieces provided are designed to fit varied ear sizes.
